Introduction to Wedding Photography
By it's
very nature getting married is something you only do once (or at least
you hope that's the case!). So it follows that choosing a wedding
photographer is also something that you are only likely to do just once.
Therefore most people will be very inexperienced as to what to expect
and what to look for in selecting a photographer to capture their very
special day. In the Bournemouth & Poole area there are more that 50 full
time professional photographers offering their wedding photography
services and probably another 200 amateur or semi-professional
photographers of various abilities who supplement their income by taking
wedding photos at weekends (often referred to in the trade as "weekend warriors").
This
combination of inexperienced customers and an oversaturated supply of
photographers means that some photographers are likely to do just about
anything to get a sale. If you are looking to employ the services of a
reliable and professional photographer who is going to provide you with
a great set of wedding photos then it is very important that you do a
bit of research before signing a contract. There are plenty of potential
pitfalls to avoid and our section "How to Choose a Wedding Photographer"
will help you. As with many things try to avoid "to good to be true"
offers and always go and visit the photographer and view examples of
their work. The old adage "You get what you pay for" certainly
holds true about Wedding Photography.
The best
place to start when searching for a suitable photographer is to ask your
friends and family. If someone you know has recently got married and
they really liked their wedding photos and would highly recommend them
then some of the hard work may already have been done for you. It's
important though that you arrange to view their wedding photographs as
peoples tastes differ greatly and someone's idea of what makes a great
set of photos may be very different from your own. Social networks are a
great tool for asking many people to send you recommendations but bear
in mind that most people who have only been married once have only
limited experience and some people may have ulterior motives for making
a particular recommendation i.e. they are photographers themselves
looking to cash in or they just know someone looking for work.
Most of
the top wedding photographers in the area can be fully booked up many
months, if not years, in advance. If you want outstanding pictures then
start searching for your photographer as soon as you have decided on a
wedding date. The wedding photographer's peak season is Saturdays during
the spring as this is when many couples get married. If you plan to
marry during this period then you should try to book your chosen
photographer at least 6 to 12 months in advance. If you plan to marry
out-of-season or on a Sunday then you will have a much better chance of
finding that your photographer is available and you may be able to
negotiate a better price.
